Aerial view of downtown Lorain, the Black River and the Erie Avenue Viaduct Swing Bridge

1934 - 1939 / Downtown Lorain

An aerial view of Lorain, Ohio and the Black River from the west side of the river. The north sections of downtown Lorain and the East Side neighborhood are visible in the photograph.

The Erie Avenue Viaduct Swing Bridge in the center of the photograph dates this photograph from about 1934 - 1939. This bridge was replaced by a bascule bridge in 1940, the bridge that is still being used today to cross the Black River. A ship of uncertain provenance can be seen under the swing bridge heading north to the mouth of the Black River and Lorain Harbor. Also visible on the center right of the photograph is a ship in one of the docks of the Lorain shipyards, then known as the American Shipbuilding Company.

The photographer is unknown.
