The Lorain Public Library System received a grant in spring 1939 to purchase its first bookmobile. The bookmobile, which was put into service on September 24, 1939, served rural areas in its service district which previously had no access to library services.
The bookmobile librarian was Eleanor Fenner. Horace Smith drove the bookmobile.
The "Lorain County Traveling Library" is printed above the windshield of the bookmobile. On the side of the bookmobile visible to the camera is "Lorain County Library, Lorain, Ohio". In smaller letters on the right door of the bookmobile cab is "Free Extension Service."
